BACK TO THE FUTURE

Dr. John Walvoord, former president of Dallas Seminary and a noted prophetic scholar, said, “The vision of Daniel provides the most comprehensive and detailed prophecy of future events to be found anywhere in the Old Testament.”1

I am told that among the scribes who copied the Old Testament, the seventh chapter of Daniel was considered the greatest chapter in the Scriptures. This is about pure future prophecy, the record of God’s incredible and unchanging plan for the nations. All of our modern futurists who sit in the think tanks of the nations can project their warnings about holes in the ozone, depletion of natural resources, and misuse of nuclear capabilities, but they are unable to give us a clue to the ultimate future of mankind. Daniel does. Anyone who does not believe in a supernatural Bible has a tremendous problem with the truth in this chapter.

The first six chapters of Daniel are history; chapters 7 through 12 are prophecy. Daniel had four major prophetic dreams that took place over a period of about twenty-two years. Chapter 2 of Daniel, where the dream was given to Nebuchadnezzar and interpreted by Daniel, and chapter 7, where the dream is given to Daniel and interpreted by an angel, are placed together in historical perspective. Chapter 2 shows history from a pagan king’s viewpoint, with the gigantic statue and a head of gold, chest and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, legs of iron, and feet of iron and clay. That was Nebuchadnezzar’s idea of human history, the great accomplishment of humanity and humanism. Now we’ll see God’s viewpoint of the nations and their moral character.

Daniel conveys prophetic truth through signs and symbols, just as John did in the book of Revelation.
